Awards

Members of the editorial board of Written Communication joined us for the presentation of two awards. Anne Haas Dyson was awarded the first Hayes Award for Excellence in Research Best Article in Written Communication for "Staying in the (Curricular) Lines:  Practice Constraints and Possibilities in Childhood Writing," Written Communication 25, 119-159.  {January 2008} Accepting on her behalf was Maisha Fisher. The Editor's Choice Award for New Scholars, 2008, was presented to Huiling Ding, for "TheUse of Cognitive and Social Apprenticeship to Teach a Disciplinary Genre: Initiation of Graduate Students into NIH Grant Writing," WrittenCommunication 25, 3-52.  {January 2008}.

 

Speakers

This year we were honored with the presence of two speakers highly regarded in the area of second language acquisition and literacy. Paul Kei Matsuda, Arizona State University, share his insights on the college composition and second language learners in a talk entitled, "Beyond the Myth of Linguistic Homogeneity: Strategies for Negotiating Language Differences."  Following Dr. Matsuda's presentation, Eva Lam, Northwestern University, presented her work on "Linguistic Diversity and New Media in Contexts of Migrant Transnationalism."
